Search Engine Optimizing - Google Ranking

So many people ask me how can they be top 10 in Google. There are a lot of factors and Google changes them to keep you on your toes but the main things will never change.

  1. Content is King focus on who your audience is and what they will want to see. The more content you have that is tailored to your topic, the higher your page ranking will be in Google.

  2. Keeping up with the Jones - Content has to be kept current. You can't expect to not update your site for months or years and stay on top. There is always some other site out there starting up bigger and better than yours. This is one time that you have to keep up with the Jones.

  3. Get Out There – Who's your audience? Where do they hang out? See if you can get those sites to link to yours. You might have to pay or not. The more people that link to you, not only will it it increase your ranking but you will get the attention of the right people for your site.

  4. Clean Code – Although meta tags aren't the be all and end all that they used to be, they still matter. The same goes for clean code and alt tags for images, etc. Also use header tags and hrefs on relevant words (i.e. not "click here" but maybe "pizza sauce recipe" - assuming your site is about pizza or recipes). These small things won't put you on top but every little bit helps and they won't hurt if done right either.

  5. HTML vs. PDF – Don't be lazy and attach all your longer content via a pdf. It is not searchable and doesn't help your ranking. Once you create the html page, you can always attach the pdf if your visitor wants to print a copy.

But honestly being found online isn’t your only marketing tool. People who say "If you aren’t found in Google you might as well not have a site." are not entirely correct.

If your business card or you put an ad in a small paper, etc., includes you URL this will allow you to have a small ad space with just a marketing hook and then give you room on your website to say whatever else you need to with pictures and text, or even client testimonials.

Having an online brochure with no other content than your business info still gives you a step up. Those who are checking you out and thinking of trying your small business will ALWAYS go to the web to see what they can learn about you. So why lose that edge?
